Paul Harris Rotary Dinner - June 2023

The community of members and friends of the Rotary Club of Greater New Brunswick gathered at the Elks Lodge on June 29, 2023 to recognize the accomplishments over the past twelve months and look forward with anticipation to new leadership in the coming year. All present expressed their gratitude to outgoing President Stephen Ferrara and welcomed the enthusiastic remarks of Geoffrey Dietzel who will lead the club in 2023/2024. The occasion marked the annual installation and oath ceremony of officers and board of directors, conducted that evening by Andrew Calamaras, Rotary Foundation Committee Chair.

There were other highlights of the annual dinner meeting celebration. There was a moment honoring the passing of Frank Gschossmann when his wife Barbara received remarks of his club service by members and a certificate of appreciation. Sharan Jain recognized the leadership of Yuvaraaj Murthy, the outgoing president of the Rutgers Rotaract Club, and the incoming president Zaniyah Boykins. Both students were awarded Rotary Scholarships while they attended Middlesex College before enrolling at Rutgers University-New Brunswick. Finally, there was formal action when club members ratified a proposal for the adoption of new by-laws approved earlier in June by the board of directors.

Rotary Literacy Campaign 2023

Local Literacy Projects

The Greater New Brunswick Rotary is currently seeking help from the local community for our annual Literacy Campaign.  We are seeking help in the form of sponsorships for each of our local thirteen elementary schools.  Annually we plan to provide one Dewey Does book titled "I Am Your Lil Super Hero" and one Special Rotary Dictionary for each local third grader.  Provided we receive enough sponsorships and funding, we plan to include every third grade class in thirteen schools in three local school districts!  In addition to the traditional uses, the students dictionary includes additional resources that are utilized by the teachers throughout the school year to help deliver geography, history, math and science lessons.

Dewey Does Author Thomas Kinslow and various members will organize presentations at each school.  Sponsoring individuals and corporations are invited to join and share in this experience.  Please contact Thomas who is working on the schedules if you wish to be a part of this remarkable program this year.  We will offer dates for when the third graders will assemble, and the Dewey Does books and Rotary Special Dictionaries will be distributed at each school.  Our club is appealing for your support in the form of donations of $250 for each school. To members who have already offered to donate, please confirm your pledge by sending your check or use the website to transmit payment (noting “Literacy project”).   Please reach out to Thomas Kinslow tomas@deweydoes.com or call (917) 280-8142.

Dr. Michael Norris gave a slide presentation of George Washington through the work of artists at the Thursday, September 8 evening meeting of the Rotary Club of New Brunswick. Using paintings from various museum collections, Mike described the legacy of Washington as a surveyor, member of the Virginia militia, tobacco farmer near the Potomac River at Mount Vernon, and commander of the colonial forces against the British that achieved American independence. Through portraits by past and modern painters, Washington was illustrated as the “indispensable man” whose leadership and presidency set the model for future generations. Mike Norris worked as museum educator at the Metropolitan Museum of Art for nearly twenty years and now gives public lectures on a variety of topics. His website is www.armchairarttours.com.
