Dr. Michael Norris gave a slide presentation of George Washington through the work of artists at the Thursday, September 8 evening meeting of the Rotary Club of New Brunswick. Using paintings from various museum collections, Mike described the legacy of Washington as a surveyor, member of the Virginia militia, tobacco farmer near the Potomac River at Mount Vernon, and commander of the colonial forces against the British that achieved American independence. Through portraits by past and modern painters, Washington was illustrated as the “indispensable man” whose leadership and presidency set the model for future generations. Mike Norris worked as museum educator at the Metropolitan Museum of Art for nearly twenty years and now gives public lectures on a variety of topics. His website is www.armchairarttours.com.
